Water
Decision
One water and wastewater provider for the Auckland region.
Explanation
Three types of water are supplied, treated or collected in Auckland - drinking water, wastewater and stormwater.
A council controlled organisation of the Auckland Council, Watercare Services Ltd, will be the provider of integrated water supply and wastewater services to Auckland. It will fund water and wastewater infrastructure from charges based on water use. All assets will remain in public ownership.
Under the Local Government (Auckland Council) Act 2009, the Auckland Transition Agency is required to approve a process for, and oversee, the planning and management of the integration of Auckland’s water supply and wastewater services by Watercare Services Limited.
Watercare is also required to formulate a plan for the interim management of stand-alone water and wastewater schemes as from 1 November 2010, and detailed proposals for the long-term management and operation of these schemes for consideration by the Auckland Council.
Watercare Services Ltd will not be responsible for integration arrangements for stormwater drainage. The Auckland Council will be responsible for stormwater decisions.
Auckland Council will be the environmental watchdog for water quality and coastal water management for the whole region, establishing, monitoring and enforcing environmental standards. It will set policy for water, stormwater and wastewater management.
